Fluke Drawings
These are tangible records of the humpback whales of Stellwagen Bank. As a field naturalist with the New England Aquarium Whale Watch, one learns to identify humpback whales by ventral tail patterns unique to each individual animal. Each natural canvas is seen briefly before the leviathan vanishes on a sounding dive, but the field illustration provides the observer with a prolonged connection in exchange of a momentary encounter.
