This male humpback crossed my path while pursuing two mates outside Lāhainā harbor in March of 2023. I met Manunauna but once, unaware of the quiet tribulation he would later survive thousands of miles to the north. While boldly pursuing herring into harbors and shallow coastlines, he became entangled in the ropes of a crab pot. After swimming encumbered for hundreds of miles, he miraculously shed the gear and has since returned to Juneau in the 2026 season.
