Kelp is one of four calves known to Barnacles. Acorn, Limpet, and Urchin are his lesser known siblings are thematically named after marine invertebrates. Born in 2009, Kelp returns every summer season to Juneau in a geographical display of site fidelity.
This particular sculpture has a more meticulous approach to the depiction of water. The fluke patterns require literal depiction of pigment and markings, whereas the base of the composition is open to expressive painting.
