A favorite of the Juneau whale watching community, Sasha has been seen in the early days of the 2024 feeding season.

Last summer, Sasha’s calf Tango was fatally struck by a ferry and washed ashore on Hump Island. Despite her loss, this mother continued to feed in the waters abutting her child’s resting place.

How surreal it is to be celebrated and have tributes built by terrestrial artisans, unaware that another community of mammals shares in your grief. May Sasha flourish and enrich Alaska with her presence and future progeny.
