Fluke Sculptures
Chunk the humpback whale was beloved by the New England community before his demise by entanglement, but educator Within the Whale is carrying her story with an inflatable replica. This traveling showcase now includes my wooden replica of her fluke pattern, as well as an articulated head.
A humpback whale, when observed over time, demonstrates character as unique as the intricacies of their fluke patterns. When I reproduce the pigments of whales in memoriam, I aspire to prolong their presence.
The fluke of Chunk no longer exists in the wild, as not even a skeletal armature remains of the boneless appendage. It is the obligation of those who knew her to speak for her species in words, wood, and even media as unexpected as an inflatable clone.
