Fluke Sculptures
Admiral Frank is a humpback whale I encountered during an artist residency at the Ernst Gruening Cabin with Alaska State Parks. This denizen was witnessed feeding in a bubblenet group of ten whales including Arpeggio and Maltease.
Admiral Frank was identified as a juvenile in Maui in 2005, but was encountered a decade later in the breeding ground in Banderas Bay, Mexico. Migrations to differing mating arenas is uncommon amongst humpbacks, but allows “cross pollination” between genetically distinct stocks.
