One late evening in the candlelight of my study I stumbled upon the fluke of an anonymous humpback whale, photographed by an unknown mariner. This creature bore “rake” scars from orcas attacks, tracings reminiscent of human aesthetics.

Monks have long practiced the art of raking gravel into precise patterns, known as Samon or hokime. Found in zen gardens, these rhythmic courses perfect the powers of concentration and invention.
